Amazon Opens Grocery Category to 3P Merchants

Grand Opening of the Amazon.com Grocery Category
Nov 24, 2008

Earlier this year, a new category for merchants was created on Amazon.com. It is our pleasure to announce the official "Grand Opening" of this category and to invite all merchants to participate.

You can add products using Seller Central Add a Product, Amazon Seller Desktop, and product templates. Pre-approval is not required for selling in Grocery.

Note that item_package_quantity and standard_product_ID (UPC, EAN, or GTIN) are required fields, and products without these values will not be accepted. See Seller Central Help for full details on listing products.

Welcome to Amazon Grocery!

If you have items that would fit in this new Amazon category, then head over to Amazon and start selling.

Just my 15%

Oh boy....I can see JD pulling out his hair and screaming "groceries" "now we need groceries too!!" LOL

I laughed out loud when I read your comment. Thanks for the chuckle.

We may be moving soon. Can I sell the meat from my freezer? I suppose I should upgrade to Priority or Overnight.

Rich, just get it to the customer by the expiration date and your gold.

If eBay allowed Grocery sales they would have to add another DSR for freshness

Actually, the grocery items on eBay have been a great INTERNATIONAL sales item for some sellers for quite awhile.

There are a number of items sold in the U.S. only that individual international folks love to import. The real trick, though, is to make sure the specific item is allowed through each country's customs.

We sold food internationally for awhile but stopped only because we didn't have time to focus on that particular category in the way we wanted. There are only so many hours in the day (unfortunately).

I think it is a great move on Amazon's part. As I said in my blog post yesterday, the great sucking sound continues as Amazon siphons off the good eBay sellers.

The grocery category on Amazon being unrestricted at the moment is going to pull some really good small and medium-sized sellers away from eBay IMO.

And, Randy, if eBay adds any more silly DSRs to the seller ratings as you are suggesting, I think I'll just scream (of course one seller screaming, adding to the noise, would never be heard).

Do they have restrictions on the types of food and do they require any food certifications? I know there are a lot of small food production outfits out there and it makes me wonder if all of them are properly certified for food handling. I'd be worried about buying something that someone is producing in their basement somewhere (unless they've got a properly-certified commercial kitchen down there :-)
