Are You Ready to Rumble?

Tomorrow begins a new chapter in the life of eBay sellers in the US, as the new 30-day Fixed Price listing makes its debut. Are you ready?
Sellers have been working diligently on their listing strategies in the face of this new listing format, but there is much uncertainty. My suggestion is to take this gradually so you can modify your strategy as you see what works and what doesn't.
I worry that commodity product sellers will just throw everything into core to see what sticks. Remember you aren't or one of the new Diamond sellers coming on board soon -- you still pay listing fees. Because you pay listing fees, conversion still matters.
My guess is the media category will be flooded with product from the big sellers, hoping to stake their claim on CORE. Once one big guy does it the others will have to follow. This is certainly going to be interesting to watch.
My suggestion to everybody out there, is take the next 30-days to learn how things work and come mid-October you will have the right strategy to have a successful Q4. Hopefully there will be enough demand on the site for all of you.

Randy, any predictions as to incoming diamond sellers in the media category?

Brings to mind the Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times"

After reading Scott Wingo's strategy advice for selling on eBay of today I came to 2 conclusions.

1. Either I am getting more stupid as I get older, or this stuff is as convoluted as the path of the Boudini Bird (google it)

2. Because eBay does not provide their customers with facts, just hints, nobody including eBay knows how it will work. Everybody is guessing, and gambling with the sellers livelihood.

Anonymous, I think is the only Diamond Seller in the media category at least through Christmas.

Yeah, it is real difficult to get a fix on what you should do. Caution should be exercised.

Do you know if the changes go into effect tonight (Monday) at midnight or Tuesday at midnight? I've heard conflicting reports.

Stefan, they traditionally launch at midnight of the day they are scheduled.

So that should be midnight tonight but I don't have confirmation of that.

After much thought (say, 60 seconds), I have come up with an analogy to ebay's methodology and the inner workings of the Best Match algorithm. I envision a movie...

It would involve a Franz Kafka "plot", a screenplay written by Lewis Carroll, with Jackson Pollock as director of photography and directed by Stanley Kubrick (ala 2001: A Space Odyssey, et al). Ah, such a simple thing, indeed.

Sorry, no intention to make light of the current situation, but it is FUBAR and I believe that peeps have no idea just how FUBAR it is. The BM "sort" is still insane, yet has wonderful clarity when viewed by way of the New Experience.

I am a firm believer that ebay cannot have both Experiences working correctly at the same time. And now, by tomorrow morning, a new gizmo will be introduced to the site. Ebay's track record speaks for itself.

New Gizmos = 100% guarantee of continuous glitches. Mind you, not all at once and not 100% of the time; it's that appear-disappear aspect that adds the magical quality to ebay. Good Luck!

I am taking bets that highly flooded categories will become Featured moneymakers for ebay, within a few days. Nothing but Featured listings - 25 pages worth or more - as far as the glazed-over buyer's eye can see.

Interesting line in the just posted message on the eBay announcement board:
Also starting at midnight, and good through the end of the year, our special holiday promotion goes into effect for Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games: Fixed Price Insertion Fees are just 5 cents when you use Pre-filled Item Information (see details here).
You wouldn't expect them to make such a big deal of this if it was really likely that the fees were going to stay at five cents next year.

Just loaded my first FP30 listing at 1:00 AM PT, so it's running. True to ebay glitch form, the ebay selling form no longer works correctly if you try to load a self-hosted picture as the Gallery Photo. You have to use Picture Manager.
