I Usually Don't Quote Valleywag , But...

Valleywag does get some good information, so I'm going to share that with you here. They apparently got a hold of the eBay layoff package: "Package is 22 weeks (4 week notice, 5 week warn notice, 13 week severance) + 5 months COBRA, and some number of months outplacement assistance + eligibility for unemployment — which makes most people fully funded until around May-June 2009."

Also, this little tidbit that is very interesting; "Marketing has ceased to be a function and the CMO is leaving. Worldwide office consolidations (closures) to be announced next."

This is big news that the CMO is leaving, because he has only been there for a year and eBay is having issues with driving buyer demand to the site. So if "marketing has ceased to be a function" how are they going to drive demand? You can't just keep buying customers off with coupons, forever.

Henrietta, over at the Red Ink Diary was first to post about the International office closings in her post entitled eBay Plans for Europe, which as just been updated. I've requested confirmation from eBay on many of these issues and was told "they will get back to me" -- so I wait patiently.

Hopefully, I will have additional information shortly.

Update:
More from Valleywag, while I wait for eBay PR to get back to me, of course after this link from Valleywag, I'm not likely to hear from eBay PR anytime soon.

Just my 15%

What's the date-stamp on that announcement? Last year?

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I ran a series of G searches yesterday and actually had a lone(some) ebay paid ad show up a couple of times.

Might as well have been a tumbleweed blowing across the screen.

Randy. You are right on top of it- as usual- thanks.

Gee Randy I am kinda fond of you so I sincerely hope you aren't holding your breath waiting for a response from eBay. Purple is such an unattractive complexion tone.

Do you think they took my advice and fired the entire PR Dept with the exception of the divine Miss Sharpe?

Henrietta,

Nope, not holding my breath, but hopeful.

Wow...big news here. Seems like ebay is starting to fold back into itself. Maybe getting back to the roots of their business, where the people who worked for ebay also bought and sold on the site, will give them new insight into what everyone else has been telling them for years. I wonder if it's too late for them. Would past buyers and sellers have moved on to the point actually consider coming back under the terms and conditions that exist now, even if ebay were to throw no listing fees at them. I'm thinking there are too many hard feelings to overcome at this point.

Beth, eBay is contracting, but no signs yet of getting back to the roots of their business. It's still buzzword-laden consultant-heavy schemes for remaking (excuse me, "disruptively innovating") the business - without actually investing money in it as far as I can see. Why have dull old marketing when you can buy Bill Me Later for 800 mil?

Talk about your useful distraction. Donahoe may be clueless how to run eBay, but he sure knows how to woo The Street.

Hallo, today I have seen a great Blog. I found it very comforting of yours and it really made me fell like it was talking right to me. Keep up the good work. Of course I also took notice of your Google advertisement. It was really very nice. If you would also look at my 3 Google ads it would be nice. Thank you very much and keep on doing like you are. Many Grettings from Germany.

Unbelievable that they use Bayspeak even amongst themselves. I think they should 'simplify' the lot of them starting with Alan. They could probably have three or four full time junior flacks for the price of one stratospheric one, and maybe, just maybe, they could learn to write in English.

Beth the terms and conditions in place now are such that I would not sell on eBay if THEY paid me.

I have a solid 100% positive FB reputation built over a number of years which I don't care to put at risk. Unlike many of my friends I do have choices, for which I am exceedingly grateful.

Greetings to Oswald, Willkommen zur Gruppe!

Randy, before everyone goes off on a tangent, might your quote refer to the European CMO, not the CMO of North America?

Update on Henrietta's blog: "It appears that all marketing will be run from the USA."

Moonlight,

I was just quoting Valleywag. I still haven't heard back from eBay on this.

They did tell me they would get back to me though. :)

I was reading that "memo" on Valleywag when I suddenly started to hear a sound - like tiny clicks, in rapid succession.

I opened my eyes and realized my nose was holding down the Spacebar on the keyboard. I had nodded off.

What a boring piece of chit. O.M.G. what a place to work! As Henrietta wrote, they actually speak that way, to each other!

Did they all go to some sort of school that taught - What? Legaleeze / non-specific panderings / PlatitudeBS 101 ???

Just think... while we used (FU)ebay to escape from that sort of corporate world BS, they actually built IT.

Ironic, huh?

From the eBay Stores Board today:

"I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP. I AM SEVERELY ILL AND WORK EBAY AS MY SOLE MEANS OF SUPPORT. OUT OF THE BLUE AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND WITH 99 PERCENT APPROVAL RATING MY STORE WAS TAKEN DOWN.
APPARENTLY I WAS 1 PERCENTAGE POINT DOWN ON THE POINT SCALE FOR SHIPPING. EBAY WANTS US TO MAINTAIN A 4.0 RATING IN NOVEMBER IN NOVEMBER!!!!! AND I HAD A A 3.9 RATING SHIPPING BECAUSE OF OVERSEAS SHIPPING THAT TOOK A LONG TIME.

RIGHT NOW I AM IN DIRE NEED OF MONEY AND WITHOUT MONEY, I WILL HAVE TO DIE. I HAVE LUPUS AND HEART DISEASE AND I AM SO VERY SICK OVER THIS.

EBAY TOOK MY LIVIHOOD AWAY WITHOUT ANY WARNING AT ALL WHATSOEVER, DUE TO A POLICY THAT IS GOING TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN NOVEMBER. THIS, IS OCTOBER!!!

RIGHT NOW, I WANT TO DIE. I HAVE NO ONE TO HELP ME. I CANNOT REACH EBAY, I AM SO SICK RIGHT NOW.

I WROTE THEM A LETTER BUT WHO KNOWS HOW LONG I WILL HAVE TO WAIT.

I HAVE BEEN ON EBAY SINCE ITS INCEPTION. NEVER HAVE I BEEN SO HUMILIATED OR DESTROYED. EBAY AFTER MEG WHITMAN LEFT HAS BECOME A SHADOW OF ITS FORMER SELF. IT IS VILE FOR DESTROYING MY LIFE AND MAKING ME AT ITS MERCY."
