Etsy, Reaches a Milestone

Etsy, just sent me an email touting some interesting numbers. Here's what they had to say:

"Greetings from Etsy, your place to buy and sell all things handmade.

We've grown to over 150,000 sellers in 171 countries, and we're just about to reach 1,000,000 members total. This is an exciting milestone for us, and we've made some recent changes to help keep things running smoothly.

With over 1.7 million products on Etsy, we're trying to help buyers more easily find what they are looking for."

Ebay has probably already made an offer to buy them.

It is only a matter of time until ebay flexes its patent muscle and clubs the competing sites to death thru the Merc-X-Change patents it has recently purchased.

Considering the ease with which ebay bought off Yahoo Auctions USA, it looks like the DOJ is going to keep on snoozing right thru this whole Online Auction Fiasco.

I sure hope they don't buy off Etsy. I think Etsy is the ONLY site that really dedicates itself to handmade items. I wish they would put in a larger arts category and maybe advertise it a bit. Right now there are tons of refugee ebay sellers looking for the right place. Etsy could easily be one of the top contenders. I've been on there since 2006 - only made 19 sales, two of which was one customer who faded out of sight without paying. Part of the business I guess. Etsy instantly refunded my fees - no questions asked and no paperwork to fill out or hoops to jump thru. They also treat feedback as though it were between two adults and not adult and coddled child. I gave that customer who did not pay two negatives and underneath my negative entry it says "kiss and make up" - meaning that at any time I can simply dissolve those negatives and we can live happily ever after. It left me with a feeling that there is still hope in this world for listing on these sites and being in command of your business :-)

Anonymous,

Only if eBay buys them.

Also, I believe Etsy is committed to its mission of promoting the artists, artisans, crafters of handmade items, so I think that their items will appear first in search and then all the suppliers and everybody else will fall in line after them.

Good move.

I think Etsy by itself is a good idea, if eBay muscles their way in that would be a bad move.

It's always warm and fuzzy in the beginning…..until it gets to big for the founders and employees to possibly manage, overheads increase and then the founders bring in investors and go public!

Now *that* is an idea eBay should steal.
