Amazon Announces TextBuyIt!

I really don't like that name "TextBuyIt", but the service sounds kind of cool. IMO, they should just call it Amazon Payments and be done with it. Eventually that is what we will all call it anyway.

My guess is that Amazon is looking into the future and sees that "Generation Y" will be the generation that jumps on this technology and they are beginning to come of age. My son is in that Generation and he is just graduating from High School.

Sure the early adopters and techies will try TextBuyIt, but for "Generation Y" texting is a way of life, just take a look at my cell phone bill if you want proof.

Here is a brief description of the service:

"Amazon TextBuyIt, a new service that lets customers use text messages to find and buy products sold on Amazon.com. With the addition of TextBuyIt to Amazon’s existing mobile offering, including its mobile site and mobile iPhone site, customers can now shop, compare prices, and buy from Amazon.com virtually anywhere they are, with any mobile device, using either text messages or their mobile device’s web browser."

Many bloggers are writing alarmist posts about the impact this will have on B&M retailers and this really could be a problem down the road. I still think B&M store will get the first purchase, if you are at the store and holding the item you want, why would you decide to buy it from Amazon?

We are an instant gratification society, if you buy it at the store you can take it home and start reading it or using it immediately, but I can see this being a big problem for repeat business to that retailer. A consumer could buy the item they came to purchase and add additional items to their Amazon Wish List or even buy them to be delivered if the price difference made sense. You can only read one book at a time right?

Now the only way I'm going to use this service, is if they give me a cell phone with a barcode scanner. I'm not going to type in a UPC code or a title into a cell phone.

BTW, take a look at the Amazon Payments website. They have a number of interesting offerings.

Randy,

Didn't you point us at a voice to text service called JOTT the other day, you don't have to type in the UPC just jott it.
